The One Degree Difference

In the world of sport you often hear coaches and athletes talking about the 1% rule, marginal gains or going the extra mile. This is the intention to improve by 1% in every area that has an impact on your performance.

Sport is cut-throat, you win or you lose. The difference between winning and losing is often small. This could be by two points in a tennis tie-break, a split second in a track race or by one goal in a team sport. This is the same in the cut-throat world of business, you win or you lose. The difference between closing a deal or making a sale could be the smallest of detail.

To reach the highest level in your sport, or whatever you do, you must constantly improve. Even when you are the best in the world, if you do not constantly improve you won’t stay at the top for long.

So how much difference does 1% make? Well what difference does 1˚ make?

Hot water - 99˚

At 99˚ water is hot.

Boiling water - 100˚

At 100˚ water boils. Boiling water comes with steam. Steam can power a locomotive.

The one degree difference

One degree is the difference between a train moving or sitting still. One degree in sport or business is the difference between being a champion and second place. One degree is the difference between being good and being great.

What have you done to improve today?

How could you improve by 1˚?

What could you do to win?
